About ReMix Memphis
A way to rethink and remix your city
The sounds of this city surround us like water. Their patterns and rhythms make us what we are. ReMix Memphis encourages people to reflect on the noises of their city, and rearrange the sounds of their lives.
Working with Memphis 3.0 planners, and with the generous support of the UrbanArt Commision, Alex Greene collected citizens' input on noise and sound to raise awareness of the Memphis 3.0 project and help plan for the next two decades of the city's growth in a creative way. Starting in 2017, in pop up events throughout the city, he surveyed opinions on the sounds of helicopters, trains, leaf blowers, chatting neighbors, concerts, birds, booming rides, and even the noises of gardening, all of which he collected in field recordings. Participants also answered the prompt, “The sound of ___ is so Memphis,” with some fascinating results.
Then, Greene made this library of sounds available to diverse Memphis musicians and producers, to mix and mash up with their own musical inventions. The result was Producer Tracks @ 3.0.
The album collects sixteen tracks from music creators all over the city. The result is a rich, dreamlike sonic journey, full of echoes any Memphian will recognize. Let these tracks flow by and you'll hear (and imagine) a bit of the drama going on here in the Bluff City.
Now in 2019, ReMix Memphis presents its field recordings in the Pink Palace Museum’s exhibit marking the Memphis Bicentennial. Concurrently, we present the first album of our city's most imaginative producers blending concrete sounds we all know with some of their finest work. And we begin the city’s third century with more remixing yet to be done.
